To be a writing coach, you do not need to be a professional writer or a teacher. The most important qualifications are that you believe good writing is an essential skill and that you have the ability to engage young people in a positive manner.
We work at the request of the classroom teacher, during the regular class periods. Scheduling is flexible: you commit to only two periods at a time—one for first drafts and one for second drafts.
We require that all coaches attend one three-hour training before they begin to coach. Evening trainings sessions are held in the fall and in early February on the University of Montana campus. We also provide on-going support throughout the school year and have resources for coaches on-line.
Before beginnng to coach, you must also register as a volunteer with the Missoula County Public Schools (MCPS) and pass a criminal background check. The cost of the background check is $6. Details will be provided at the training.
If you would like to volunteer to be a writing coach, please fill out the registration form below, including which training session you would like to attend. UM students: If you are volunteering as part of a UM class, please let us know the name of your class/ instructor.
